The sixth annual Foodbank Hunger Report was released in October and highlights the hidden hunger crisis in Australia.
In South Australia we have seen a 14% increase in the need for food relief over the last 12 months. Foodbank SA is currently providing more than 117,000 South Australians with food relief every month. One third of these are children. Despite our best efforts, each month there are around 6,000 people unable to be assisted, due to lack of funds, food or both.
While Foodbank SA distributed more than 5 million meals in the 2017-18 year, we still need an additional 30% more food just to meet the current levels of demand in SA.
People in regional and remote areas are finding it particularly difficult to access food and are 33% more likely to experience food insecurity than those living in Australia’s major and capital cities.
